What exactly is an ergonomic baby carrier?
We call a carrier ergonomic if the child occupies a so-called ergonomic position in it.

And what does "ergonomic position" actually mean when carrying a child?
The ergonomic position of the child in the carrier is easily recognized by the fact that the child's knees are bent and are higher than the bottom, forming an imaginary letter "M". This achieves the lowering of the pelvis and the rounding of the back.

Why should a baby in a carrier have an ergonomic position?

A rounded back frees up space between the vertebrae, which then do not press against each other due to the transferred weight of the child's heavy head in an upright position.

Ergonomic baby carriers allow the back to be rounded, while the backrest of the carrier is a firm support for the rounded back, and the body does not collapse in them.

If the weight of the head was not distributed smoothly along the entire length of the back, the pressure acting between the vertebrae would be transferred to the pelvic area and the whole body, whose muscular corset is not yet sufficiently strengthened, would be overloaded. In the ergonomic carrier, the body is securely supported, but at the same time maximally relaxed in its natural position, as it was in the prenatal period.

What about hips, is a carrier good for them?

The position of widely spread and bent legs enables ideal blood circulation around the hip joints and therefore favorable conditions for the maturation of the hip nuclei. In many cases, carrying in a scarf or an ergonomic carrier has already replaced the so-called wide packing recommended by orthopedists as a prevention or treatment of a positive clinical finding during the examination of the hip joints of newborns and babies.

Wide wrapping is the insertion of several cotton diapers between the baby's legs so that they are spread wide apart, a position very similar to that which the baby occupies in a sling or an ergonomic carrier.

How can I recognize a carrier in which the child will be able to take the correct position, i.e. ergonomic?
The correct position of the child's legs can be achieved in the carrier, in which the fabric reaches the child and therefore supports him, roughly from leg to leg, or from one popliteal fossa to the other.

In addition, the carrier must be shaped at least a little in the area of the bottom so that the bottom of the child "fits" into the hole. By bending the legs with the knees above the level of the bottom, the child's pelvis will automatically lower. This position is also pleasant for the child, because the weight of the legs does not rest on the edges of the carrier and the child does not press on the thighs.

At the same time, the fabric should not be so wide that it reaches beyond the knee holes (on the calves). The child would then not be able to fully bend the legs and move them freely, which would cause inappropriate pressure in the lumbar region. In addition, it would be harder for the legs to get blood, and it would be uncomfortable for the child after a while.

How can I safely recognize a carrier that is not ergonomic?

A stretcher that is reinforced to keep a straight shape, as is the case with backpacks, for example, cannot be called ergonomic. Unfortunately, this is still a common feature in many foreign, globally sold types of baby carriers, which you can find in pram stores and many e-shops.

Another defect of these baby carriers is the too narrow strip of fabric between the baby's legs, the fabric cannot be adjusted from knee to knee, or come close to it, and the baby basically "hangs by the crotch" in them, with outstretched legs pointing down. This position is inappropriate, the weight of the entire upper half of the body is transferred to the pelvic area. After wearing such a carrier for a while, the child is usually uncomfortable, for obvious reasons. But make no mistake, the child does not have to "report" an inappropriate position. Children can endure a lot, and the excitement of the change, the view and, above all, the proximity of the parent, can be greater than the discomfort of the carrier. A child who is happy in an unsuitable carrier does not mean that his position is correct and will not cause him discomfort

These carriers are often referred to as " kangaroos ", and this term is unfortunately often used non-transparently for ergonomic baby carriers, respectively. they throw all the baby carriers and children into one bag. It is an outdated term used mostly by those who have not yet had the opportunity to delve into the issue of stretchers. The "more educated" refer to this type of inappropriate carrier as a "signature" .

Why are unsuitable baby carriers sold at all?

Unfortunately, very little is still known about carrying children in a carrier or a sling, or education of professional staff in stores, but also of medical staff, for example, is still very low.

On almost every trip to some tourist-attractive destination, you will encounter unsuitable baby carriers. It's a shame, parents with such carriers mean well, they want to carry the child and give him the main and most important thing, closeness, contact and a sense of security. Unfortunately, these parents don't know that wearing it can be significantly more comfortable for the baby and for both of them. Such "signs" can be found in almost every store with strollers, but usually no one there informs about the difference between baby carriers, and often they don't even know.

Quality ergonomic baby carriers are not the cheapest, and this may also be the reason why a person who is not very familiar with the issue of carrying children reaches for a cheap carrier made in China, when they do not know the differences between carriers. People often buy a baby carrier who haven't tried it and don't know if it will be comfortable for them and the baby, so they go for a cheaper product. Usually, with an unsuitable baby carrier, they find that it is not comfortable to wear and they soon stop wearing it.
Anyone who tries a proper ergonomic carrier for a baby or a larger child is often surprised that they hardly feel the weight of the child, they are able to carry it for longer, the child is satisfied in a comfortable position and usually falls asleep very soon. Probably the most famous ergonomic baby carrier, such a pioneer is the Manduca baby carrier, but the market has developed a lot since Manduca's time (Manduca is also trying to do the same, because its first version is not very variable) and fortunately there are also correct and really excellent baby carriers on the Czech market a whole range and you just have to choose.

What about forward facing so the baby has a view?

It is not recommended to carry the child in front of the body facing away from the parent. First of all, it is not possible to achieve the correct position of the back and legs, and it is also not recommended due to the excess of stimuli that a tired child cannot resist, which can cause stress. This stress is removed if the child is carried facing the parent, either in front of the body or on the back, when at any time he can "hide" with the parent by leaning his head against him and closing his eyes and feels safe, which is a great shame

What are ergonomic baby carriers made of?

The right material for the production of ergonomic stretchers is solid fabric. The knit is too elastic, it sags too much when loaded and is therefore not suitable. The fabric should preferably be made of natural materials, due to contact with the child's skin and mouth. Therefore, most manufacturers sew baby carriers from cotton fabric, which is breathable, pleasant to the touch and easy to maintain with regular washing. In this respect, those which are woven with such a weave of yarn that is strong in the longitudinal direction and flexible in the transverse direction win over all fabrics. Such fabrics are used to make baby wraps. They are the softest and adapt best to the child's body. Jožánek has his own "scarf" woven for these purposes, from which our stretchers are sewn. However, these fabrics are significantly more expensive than commonly available cotton canvases, so they also increase the price of the stretcher. If you like a cloth baby carrier, you won't do anything wrong with it, as long as it "fits" well for you and the baby. But the sling carrier is rightly considered the most comfortable for the baby. A stretcher made of a so-called shawl is called a shawl stretcher. It is therefore only a description of the material. You don't have to worry that the scarf carrier is binding. It can be tied, semi-tied or fully buckled (backpack). All Jožánek baby carriers are shawls.

The right size of the baby carrier is essential!

The carrier may be ergonomic, but if the child is small, an ergonomic position cannot be achieved in it anyway. Therefore, it is important to choose a baby carrier of the right size. There are a large number of suitable baby carriers on the Czech market, in various sizes. Some carriers are one-size-fits-all, they only last for a certain period of time, but even this one can be fully sufficient if you are only looking for a carrier to cover a certain period of time. Other stretchers are so-called growing ones. The size of the growing carrier can be gradually adjusted to the size of the child.

Jožánek baby carriers not only meet all requirements for ergonomic baby carriers, but also the strict requirements of international certification authorities. We will be honored if you choose our baby carrier and you and your treasure will enjoy wearing it.
